Writing Tips

What is Ghostwriting?

Like copywriters, ghostwriters are hidden in plain sight. Their work is everywhere! Ghostwriting is the act of writing content for someone else on their behalf. A client hires a ghostwriter, and is the named author on the final piece. These writers can be hired to write a wide variety of content such as books, proposals, speeches, and online content. Since the client is the credited author, they will make final decisions on what the content says. Since their name is listed as the author, the writer must try and write in the client’s voice as opposed to their own. Writing for someone else can be a challenge, especially for new ghostwriters. But there are plenty of tools and resources to get you started.

Get Involved and Create a Platform

The first step to becoming a ghostwriter is to determine where your skills are needed. Finding jobs from people or companies that need ghostwriters may seem like a daunting task. However, there are several resources online to help you get started. Sites like RitersBlock allow you to create a portfolio and connect with potential clients. Using online groups and platforms will help get you involved in a writing community.

Practice Interviewing

In order to write the content that your clients need, you’ll want a clear understanding of the project. To do this, a ghostwriter has to interview clients by asking them important questions about goals for the content and what it should include. This can be done by talking to them on the phone or in person, in addition to having them fill out a questionnaire. The questionnaire will allow the client to answer questions in greater detail so that you can refer to them as you are writing. When writing up questions to ask, think of questions you will face when writing the content. You can also consider questions that a reader may have about the subject.

Develop your own Style and Outline

The more you practice writing in general, the more you will develop your own style. Perfecting your craft in a certain field like athletics, automotives, or cooking, could be beneficial when appealing to certain clients and getting repeat orders from them. Writing about subjects that you enjoy can help with this. Writers also use outlines to their advantage and organize their work. Using outlines will make your writing consistent and provide a natural flow to the material.

Network

Word of mouth can be a big help when seeking ghostwriting jobs. Let people know that you’re working as a ghostwriter by telling them in person or posting on social media channels.

Publish Samples of your Work

Publishing samples of your work allows potential clients to see what you are capable of. If you don’t have samples, write something of your own. This acts as sort of a resume and is a chance to show your creativity and writing style. Use these to show a potential client why they should choose you to write for them.

Publishing samples, networking, and finding people who need ghostwriters doesn't have to take up precious writing time. RitersBlock is a site that’s making it easier to form connections and share your portfolio.
